OHSU—AHEC Scholars
AHEC Scholars is a two-year national program funded by HRSA, designed to better prepare health profession students for future practice in rural and urban underserved communities. Statewide collaboration between the Oregon AHEC Program Office and Regional Centers, and academic and clinical partners provides a robust interprofessional experience for learners.
Participating students earn a certificate of completion after gaining valuable experience at team-based rural and/or urban underserved clinical practice sites, and receive didactic training focused in eight core topic areas. Collectively, this training aims to prepare health profession students to be better equipped at addressing the unique needs of underserved communities.
OHSU—Interprofessional Practice and Education
Working across OHSU's schools and programs, our IPE program aims to create healthcare workers who are committed to making team-based, patient-centered care the new standard. The success of the Interprofessional Initiative relies on collaboration among administrators, faculty, students, community partners and patients.
OHSU’s Interprofessional Education Initiative is a signature experience for students in the clinical health professions at OHSU. We offer a variety of interprofessional educational opportunities for our students across many of our programs.
OHSU—Scholars for a Healthy Oregon
Make a difference with your degree by applying for funding through the Scholars for a Healthy Oregon Initiative (SHOI). Designed with both the student and Oregon workforce in mind, SHOI provides eligible students with a unique opportunity to help address healthcare disparity in the state.

The Northwest Native American Center of Excellence at OHSU will comprehensively and sustainably address the health care needs of all people by increasing Native American voice in the U.S. health professions workforce.
Public Health Programs in Oregon
In 2016, a United Health Foundation study found that Oregon ranked 21st out of all 50 states in terms of population health. As such, ample opportunities exist for students who aspire to enter the public health field. Oregon State University—one of the state’s two flagship universities—operates the College of Public Health and Human Sciences, which includes both undergraduate and graduate programs. In addition, Oregon Health and Sciences University and Portland State University have joined forces to operate their own OHSU-PSU School of Public Health.
